Vigilance Tip of the Week

Be Careful on Your Next Shopping Trip

It is best to go shopping with someone during the day, but if you must shop at night, be careful. I often worry about the vulnerability of young women shopping at night and especially mothers with children. With that said, there are ways to improve personal security by using common sense, trusting your instincts and being extra cautious.

When you park your car, remember where you parked, even if you have to write it down. Being unable to locate a car can cause you undue stress and confusion while making you a better target for a criminal misadventure. Never leave clearly visible cell phones, purses, mp3 players, packages or any other valuable items in your parked car. This includes identifiable information about you like books with your name on them, your mail, labeled luggage, etc. Always conceal these items to reduce your chances of being burglarized or stalked.

Be alert to anyone who might follow you into the store. If you discover an unwanted stalker go see the manager of the store. Don't exit the store. It is better to be embarrassed than hurt or abducted.

Exiting the mall or grocery store presents security challenges, especially if your hands are full. It is very important not to be distracted until you are safely in your car with the doors locked. Get your keys out of your pocket book taking full advantage of the stores lighting and the capacity for use as an alarm or weapon. If your instincts are warning you of danger (from an approaching stranger) immediately turn around and return to the store or find another person(s) to join.

As you approach your car, be aware of your surroundings. Look around the car and in the car to avoid the surprise of an intruder. Remember a shopping cart can be used to separate you and another person who may be threatening. Unlock only the door you need to enter the car, reducing your risk of an intruder slipping into the passenger seat. If ever an intruder enters your car, immediately open your door and escape. Being abducted is more dangerous than initiating the escape.

As I mentioned earlier, there are more safety and security challenges if you are shopping with a child. First, never leave your child unattended. It is better to shop with another adult, so you can take turns shopping and minding the child or children. As an extra precaution, once inside the store, point out security guards to your child, so if they get separated from you, they will know where to go for help. For older children, avoid using the mall arcades as a babysitter because child predators like places where unattended children are easy prey. Teach your children everything they need to know to contact you or another adult.
